Public Research Lesson 2010

INTRODUCTION
North Vista Primary School and Yuying Secondary School are proud to organise the largest public research lesson for teachers in Singapore. Lesson Study (LS) is a Japanese approach to instructional improvement. Of late, this approach has gained increasing popularity as a major form of teacher-led professional development in Singapore schools. LS allows teachers to plan a lesson collaboratively, deliver a live research lesson (conducted by one member of the LS team and observed by fellow teachers) and reflect on the lesson to constantly improve their teaching practices. Through LS, teachers develop an “eye” to carefully study student learning and behaviour. Truly, LS places teachers in an active role as researchers and enhances the collective capacity of teachers in schools.

OBJECTIVES
The Public Research Lesson aims to
• promote LS as an effective PD tool for Singapore teachers (for teachers new to LS);
• demonstrate effective facilitation, leading to insightful learning for teachers (for LS facilitators); and
• improve the teaching and learning of Primary Mathematics as the Research Lesson will focus on Primary 5 Mathematics (for all Mathematics teachers).

STRUCTURE
The event will feature a live research lesson on stage. It will be a P5 Mathematics lesson conducted by Mrs Irene Ong (Maths HOD, North Vista Primary School). Thereafter, there will be an open post-lesson discussion led by Dr Yeap Ban Har.
